Owning a dog is not just a privilege-it's a responsibility. These animals depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more. If you are considering taking a dog into your life, you need to think seriously about the commitment that dog ownership entails. If you already have a dog, you need to consider if you are fulfilling all your obligations as its owner.

Have you really thought through owning a new dog?  The AKC has 101 suggestions to consider before bringing your pet home.  Below are a few.

  • Evaluate your Lifestyle
  • Choose A Breed based on a list of your own needs/lifestyle.
  • Get a Referral from a responsible, ethical breeder whose primary concern is to produce high quality, good health and stable temperament.  The AKC BREEDER REFERRAL can put you in contact with a responsible breeder and/or rescue.
  • Puppies aren't for everyone.  Consider an older dog.
  • Prepare to wait.  A new puppy/dog is a huge commitment.  Waiting on the right puppy/dog instead of rushing out to a pet store will be much more rewarding in the end.
  • Dog-Proof Your Home.
  • Research a trainer and consider a consultation to set up rules for your house.  Dogs need clear boundaries and limits.  A professional trainer can help you set up appropriate limits.
  • Find a Veterinarian.  Developing a good relationship with your veterinarian is very important to the health of your dog.
